Munch returned to this deeply traumatic event again and again in his art, over six completed oil paintings and many studies in various media, over a period of more than 40 years. BETSY BROUN: A few years ago when the museum considered buying this painting called “The Sick Child” by J. Bond Francisco, some people thought the subject was just too sentimental, too Victorian and schmaltzy. We acquired it anyway because in the early 20th century, it was one of the most famous American paintings anywhere. Spotting the Sick Child is an interactive tool commissioned by the Department of Health and Health Education England to support health professionals in the assessment of the acutely sick child.
